microgest ED Question:

I’m currently taking Microgest ED (brand name “Mithuri”) which contains .15mg Levovorgestrel and .03 Ethinylestradiol as an oral contraceptive. I’m living in Maldives and it’s the only birth control pill that is available here. Is it okay to drink alcoholic beverages with this prescription? The doctor that prescribed me this medication never said anything about interactions but I do have several drinks once or twice a week. I’ve been on this medication for 6 months already, just want to make sure it’s okay to have alcohol before I buy another year supply. Thank you!

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

If you have no side effects from this drug such as dizziness then you are probably OK using a moderate amount of alcohol while on this contraceptive.

Oral contraceptives may increase the risk for some cancers (breast, liver, cervix) and alcohol use increases the risk for most cancers, but there is no strong evidence that concurrent use of contraceptives and alcohol would significantly increase cancer risk above that caused by either agent alone.
