The Need for Alcoholic Treatment.
Alcoholism has always been a problem for humanity. It’s usage is condoned, and even encouraged in many subtle ways in our culture, and is associated with images of “being grown up”. It’s increasing prevalence, as well as a better understanding of it’s effects make Alcoholic Treatment more necessary than ever.
?The American Medical Association has classified Alcoholism as a disease, which is chronic and is characterized by the impaired control of drinking, and a preoccupation with alcohol.
Understanding Alcoholism.
Alcoholism works on several levels. It has a psychological component that is as, if not more powerful than the physical addiction itself. It’s seeds are planted in childhood by various interactions with authoritarian figures that tacitly encourage traits in the child that lead to the disorder.??The psychologist Eric Berne studied and tried to expose the hidden workings of the alcoholic mind in his analysis of the Alcoholic game. From there, even if one disagrees with his assumptions, it can easily be shown that Alcoholic Treatment has to work on several levels if it is to be effective.
The Progress of Alcoholic Treatment.
The treatment for Alcoholism varies greatly depending on how the disease is viewed. For example, those who claim that it is purely a physical need, propound that alcoholic treatment needs to consist of a detoxification process or “detox” for short. This incorporates procedures that aim at a complete cessation of alcohol coupled with alternative medication that will prevent the inevitable withdrawal symptoms.??However, empirical observation has shown that without counseling, such people invariable relapse back into their former condition.??Most alcoholic treatment however, focuses on the sufferer undergoing group therapy, or one on one sessions with their psychologist. The idea is to immerse them in a supportive atmosphere of people who understand what they are going through. Continued support is essential in these cases even after the program is complete. Patients are said to have completed the program once they reach specific goals.
Opinions vary as to the technique by which alcohol must be regulated, with some saying that total abstinence is not necessary. It is likely however, that there is no “one size fits all” solution to this sort of problem, and that each treatment needs to be tailored to the individual in question.?
Groups that facilitate Alcoholic Treatment.
Most organizations focus on group therapy to achieve their goals, and of these, the most famous is Alcoholics Anonymous. The group is very diverse and has a presence in many countries with almost 2 million members worldwide.??Other groups like the “Women for Sobriety” group are targeted towards a particular section of alcoholics (In this case, women), and customize their treatments accordingly.??
