Psychosomatic throat pain?

psychosomatic throat pain?

I am a 30 year old female with continuous pain in the throat- I would say it feels like it emanates from the voicebox, almost like a dull tootache feeling- it has been going on about 3 days now. I once had this problem over 10 years ago- had every test in the book and all came back negative. I finally accepted that it might be psychosomatic in origin and tried to put my mind elsewhere, start exercising vigorously, etc. In time, it went away and has never been back until now. I am guessing that it is some sort of stress response as I am 7 months pregnant and have had scare after scare (pregnancy complication) this past month and a half leaving me extremely stressed out. I just don’t know what to do about this pain now. Should I mention it to my ob/gyn or just try to tough it out and/or seek out nontraditional things like acupuncture? Should I have tests done to rule out any medical cause? Has anyone every heard of similar pain?

Thanks, Ann

Hello Ann,

Congratulations on your pregnancy! It’s very possible that the discomfort you’re feeling in your throat is caused by the stress you are dealing with now, especially since you’ve had tests done in the past that came back negative and the symptoms eventually went away. But, it would be a good idea to run this by your primary doctor. 10 years has past since this problem was evaluated and it could be something different this time. Good luck to both you and your baby.
