Food crisis more severe than financial crisis

While searching the internet, I bumped upon this very interesting health news article from Reuters, one of the leading wire news agencies.

It reported the lament of the World Bank regarding the too much media hype given to the world financial crisis than the food crisis experienced by various countries.

Jacques Diouf, head of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization in Rome revealed, “high food and fuel prices will increase the number of malnourished people in the world by 44 million this year to reach a total of 967 million”.

Diouf also added that the world’s poor would be the most vulnerable to a global economic downturn.

“The media have highlighted the financial crisis at the expense of the food crisis,” said Diouf.

Global leaders should take the statement of World Bank as wake up call since food is a necessity of every person in this planet.

Instead of spending money in trying to save banks, world leaders should do extra effort to save people from starvation.

Even Pope Benedict said the blame for hunger could be directed at “boundless speculation” in markets, partly blamed for high food and fuel prices. Nevertheless, he also pointed to “selfishness” by the world’s rich and a poor distribution of resources.

The global financial crisis is an indication that people around the globe must unite and set aside their selfishness to ensure we have sufficient to last for years especially for our future children.
