Accutane, Depression - or Heartbreak?

My 25 year old son has finally gotten on accutane for 2 months after waiting until he was willing to not drink. Now his girlfriend of 3 years has just broken up with him. He is very upset, having trouble focusing at work. I wonder if he could get on an anti depressant drug to help him get over this difficult time in life?

Doctor Joshua’s Answer:

There are antidepressant drugs that have no reported interactions directly with Accutane, so in principle, certain antidepressant drugs may be compatible with Accutane. In such a case, careful evaluation of the situation and medication is required.

However, Accutane may cause depression as an adverse reaction. If there is evidence of clinical depression, Accutane may need to be discontinued.

Furthermore, treating heartbreak with antidepressants is not recommended. A broken heart and the resulting difficult times are a part of a young man’s life and part of his maturing process. Treating life’s normal blues with antidepressants degrade a person’s life experience and may harm his coping mechanisms.

If you suspect he might be clinically depressed - he should see a doctor immediately. If it seems that he is just going through a tough phase after breaking up with his girlfriend, there is no need for treatment, unless he starts showing signs of depression, in which case he should see a doctor. If you are unsure what is going on, have him talk to a doctor.
