I have experienced pain in my lower left abdomen and during intercourse. After several months I went to the gynecologist. He set up two ultrasounds, a regular ultrasound and a transvaginal ultrasound. The results of these were that I do have some fibroid tumors, but they are small and he did not feel that was the source of my discomfort. The gynecologist felt that my problem may be bowel related and I was sent to my primary care physician. He ordered an abdominal CT Scan. The result of this is abnormal, according to him. Apparently i have a mass near or on my ovary measuring approximately 6 cm with some calcium deposits. He is sending me back to the gynecologist. Is this a possibility of ovarian cancer? Thank you for any information you can provide
Dr. Joshua’s Answer
Most ovarian masses are, fortunately, benign (not cancer). Of course, ovarian cancer is always a serious possibility that should be rigorously ruled out. In any case, it seems likely that surgery will be needed because the mass is so large and apparently it is causing symptoms. Most tumors that have calcification on CT are benign, but calcification alone is not sufficient to rule out ovarian cancer. Your doctor will probably order some lab work, including the ovarian cancer marker ca-125 to further aid the diagnosis.
Let me know how this turns out. You are also welcome to dicuss this further on the discussion forum. Best wishes
