Eye Damage from Pupil Dilatation?

I have a friend that is seriously damaged from a test that went wrong. He went in for a normal eye check at the eye doctors. When putting liquid eye drops to dilate his pupils, he has never recovered. His vision is some what of a prism effect. He has horrible headaches and there are days he can not even stand to open his eyes from the discomfort he has from light and color. Every night he takes medication drops. He has to be in total darkness for 1 hour. This is the only remedy that has been given to him. And it is not even a remedy. My question is, isn’t there a surgery for this. I mean when the drug was passed for using in public, did they not have a resolution for this kind of problem. When researching new drugs this had to be part of a test and they would had to have figured a cure before using it in public, right? Anyways, he has suffered for almost two years now. The reason for me being the one asking is he is from the Netherlands, and they have no answers for him and I thought that someone in USA would.?

Thank you Dr. Joshua for your time. I do pray that you have some kind of good news for my friend, so he can live a happy productive life. He is not able to do much because of the effects of this test and he is only 26 years old.

Dr. Joshua’s Answer

I’ve never heard of anything like this, and find it incredible that something like this could happen as a complication of pupil dilatation. I could imagine that serious eye injury could result as a complication of having some toxic substance used accidentally instead of the proper pupil dilatation drops. However, as I am not an expert in ophthalmology and I don’t know the details of your friend’s medical history, I cannot say what is causing his symptoms, nor can I suggest any form of treatment. What I can say however is that he should see an ophthalmologist and have his eyes thoroughly examined, and a definite diagnosis made. Once the diagnosis is made, optimal treatment can be initiated. I’m certain that the ophthalmologists in the Netherlands are up to par with their American colleagues so he should be able to get help in his home country.
