Very Early Pregnancy Symptoms While Nursing

I am a 31 year old woman and have a 8 month old daughter whom I am still nursing up to 3 times a day, but my milk has nearly vanished completely and I have been having abdominal pain quite frequently, like I did early on in both of my pregnancies, and I have been experiencing quite a bit of feminine moisture as well. Could I be pregnant again and is there a way that I can tell if my uterus is enlarged with a self exam?

Dr. Joshua’s Answer

You cannot determine your uterus size by a self exam in early pregnancy. If you feel you have very early pregnancy symptoms, you should take a home pregnancy test. A positive result confirms that you are pregnant. A negative result does not necessarily exclude pregnancy, and you should repeat the test in a week or two. If you are producing less milk and having symptoms that make you think you are pregnant, it is quite possible that you are pregnant. Pregnancy while nursing is fairly common, especially after 6 months.

Please remember that if you have worsening abdominal pain, at worst these could be symptoms of ectopic pregnancy and should be evaluated immediately because ectopic pregnancy can be life threatening.
