Swallowing Difficulty - Caused by Cervical Spine?

August 2, 2006
Hi,
I need help!? I have been having swallowing problems and now experiencing weight loss.? I do not have an appointment with a gastro doctor until August 28, 2006.? I had a barium swallow test done and it showed that my neck bones are pressing on my esophagus.? Is this problem for a gastro doctor or a neurosurgeon?? Please reply because I have to wait for this appointment and I might need to see a different doctor.

Dr. Joshua’s Answer

Whether it is a problem for the gastroenterologist surgeon or a neurosurgeon (or someone else), depends on what is determined as the cause? of the swallowing difficulty. In order to assess the role of the cervical (neck) spine in this, a cervical MRI should be performed. Compression of the esophagus by cervical spine osteophytes is rare. I would like to see a gastroesophagoscopy done as well to make sure there is no disease of the esophagus that causes this. Having said this, the decision needs to be made by your own doctor, so wait for the gastro doctor appointment and discuss this issue. Keep us posted!
