Elevated GGT (gamma-GT)

Three years ago, I got a blood test and it showed a ggt score of 135, I just took another on and the score is 128. All of my other blook scores are in normal limits. I have never drunk alcohol. Can you tell me what is going on?

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

Gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (Gamma-GT, GGT) may be elevated in various conditions including but not limited to liver disease, heart disease, diabetes, obesity and often it is elevated due to alcohol drinking, but obviously not in your case. I’m happy that your GGT was lower now than three years ago. I can’t say why your GGT is high, but it is not an uncommon finding, and many times the cause is not found. You should discuss this with your family doctor and see if he/she thinks further investigations are necessary.
