Incontinence in Children

My sister has twins a boy and a girl ten year olds, born by invitro fertilisation. Both have incontinence problems, not always though, increased frequency needing frequent visits to the toilet during schoolhours and not being able to hold leading to accidental leakages and urgency. Ultrasound is normal, a contrast study of bladder was normal and they are not ddiabetic. The urologist says they will out grow this problem but it is not happening. My doubt is if ther is any connection between them being test tube babies and this problem? Could they be having some congenital anomaly?

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

Some studies have found an association of in vitro fertilization with some structural anomalies of the urogenital system. However, your sister’s children have been examined by a urologist, and radiological examinations have also been done; this speaks strongly against any such anomalies.

Common causes for daytime incontinence in children include anxiety and stress, drinks that contain caffeine, other foor or drink ingredients that may cause hypersensitivity or irritate the bladder, overly strenuous toilet training, and constipation.

They have seen the proper specialist; there is not much I can add. Perhaps a consultation with a pediatrician might provide some new insight.
