Tightness in the Chest During Exercise in an MS Patient

I am a patient of MS, but I don’t believe that the symptoms that I have, have to do anything with that.I have a strange feeling of tidiness around my chest & back. I have started going to the gym and we exercise our upper body a lot, I don’t know if that has to do anything with it. It does not hurt when I take deep breathes. I also feel something like neuralgias/ myalgies. The feeling of tightness and some kind of pain is more when the air-conditioning is on.Please advise.

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

It could be just due to increased upper body muscle exercise & muscle tension, this is fairly common when starting or increasing muscle exercise.

However, tightness in the chest, especially upon exertion, is reason enough to see your primary care physician, because it could be a sign of coronary artery disease, especially if you have a family history of coronary artery disease, or you have elevated blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, or you are a smoker.

I doubt it’s in any way related to MS. In theory, multiple sclerosis can be exacerbated by exercise when the body temperature rises, but in this case I would say it’s unlikely.

My recommendation is therefore that you see the doctor about this.

Good luck!
