Vasectomy Reversal, In Vitro Fertilization, Advanced Reproductive Techniques

Me & My husband are REALLY wanting to have a baby…But when he was married to his EXwife-he had the surgery done to where he wouldn’t be able to have anymore children(not sure of the pacific name)…He had it done then because of marital problems that were due to his EXwife >NOT because of any health problems or anything of that nature…My husband has 3 children from the previous marriage(Twin 14yr.old boys & a 9yr.old boy)whom we have custody of..I am not sure exactly how long after the youngest boy when he had the “surgery” done..Myself & My Husband have been wanting a baby since we started dating in September 2003 but when wanted to wait until we got married Which we got married finally in June 2005..My step-children very much support the fact that me & there dad want to have a baby..So much as far as getting excited because they would like for me to have a girl because they really want a baby sister,lol..My husband is 38yr old & I am 30 yr.old..We would very much and are so serious about wanting to have a baby & most defenitely serious about being able to have the chance to tell & give the chance to tell the 3 boys that everything will be okay and that they will have the chance of being “big brothers” soon and fulfill there wishes along with myself & my husband dreams as well..We have heard of a few of the possibilities dealing with men whom have had the “surgery” and have been through a similiar situation..BUT we still have MANY questions/concerns that are running through the both of our heads..~~~~Now my husband does have insurance(Blue Cross Blue Shield) which cover Myself,My husband and the 3 boys..

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

He’s had a vasectomy. To answer your specific questions:

***Can the surgery be reversed????(We have
heard that it can be done)

Yes. Pregnancy rates after vasectomy reversal are around 30-90%, depending on various factors, including surgeon skill.

***if not, what are some of the options
other than adoption???

Advanced Reproductive Techniques, including ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) with IVF (in vitro “test tube” fertilization), where sperm are collected from the man by surgery or needle aspiration and injected into the woman’s egg, which is then implanted in the woman.

***What are usually the estimated costs
when it comes to having something
such as this being done??

Vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) costs upwards of $5,000. The costs can increase if there is a complication or if there is blockage and a more advanced procedure called vasoepididymostomy is needed, this can raise the cost to >$13,000

***When it comes to “other options”,what
are some estimated costs???

ICSI+IVF costs upwards of $12,000 per cycle. With each cycle there is about a 40% chance of pregnancy.

***What are some of the things that we
should be aware of???

IVF carries the risk of multiple births (twins, triplets).

****How should we go about doing
everything,what are some of the
steps???

I am not familiar with the clinics in North Carolina, but there are two top university hospitals which can definitely be recommended:

Duke University: contact the Duke Consultation and Referral Center toll-free at 1-888-ASK-DUKE (275-3853).

Univ. North Carolina Chapel Hill: For assistance with physician referrals and appointments, please call UNC HealthLink at (919) 966-7890, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

*****We live in north carolina…Are you able to
recommend some places we should go or
certain people that would be able to
help us??? Note: that we would be able to
“look into”…

Also, talk to your family doctor about this, he/she’ll be able to assist you with the initial steps and referrals.

Good luck!
