Urine Odor, Strange Smell of Urine

My question is regarding order of urine.? I have noticed that my urine at times smells like what i have just had to eat or drink. Example when i have a slim fast coffe shake my urine smells like coffie shake, i have also noticed when i have eaten a lot of peanut butter my urine has the oder of peanut butter. Is this something to worry about. I am a healthy 47 year old woman.

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

Some foods and vitamins may affect the smell of urine. Usually this is nothing to worry about. Some diseases, like liver failure and urinary tract infection, as well as some rare disorders, may produce a certain smell.

One possibility is that after noticing this phenomenon you’ve paid more attention to it than usual, and it’s just the previous food or drink in your digestive system that’s causing the smell in your nose, not the urine itself.

If you are feeling well otherwise, I wouldn’t worry about this too much. If not, or if you are concerned, talk to your primary care physician and have a urine test done.
