Alcohol Rehab - Ibuprofen, False Positive Drug Test?

Tuesday, March 21st, 2006

I suffer from depression and I am an alcoholic, I was in rehab for 28 day. After the 12th day I needed to go to my doctor for a medical condition. On returning from the doctor they did a urine test. Which I had no problem with…..but it come up positive for pot and of course they kicked me out.

My question is I have been taking Motrin for pain ( I had fallen out of bed my 3rd day there). I was taking 600mg 3to4 times a day for 7 days. Now is that enough to cause a false positive? I DO NOT USE DRUGS. I just have a drinking problem, the day I went to the doctor, I DID NOT, EAT, BREATH, SMOKE, ETC…. ANY POT. I need to go back to rehab, I am not ready to be out. I fear of leaving the house. I need an answer ASAP so I can go back!!!!!

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

Ibuprofen can cause a false positive test for cannabinoids. Cannabis (THC) tests are about 98% accurate, and latest test assays have been calibrated to distinguish between ibuprofen and cannabis use, but high doses of ibuprofen may still interfere with the tests. I recommend you stay off the ibuprofen for a week or two and take the test again.
