I had started going to a urologist due to urgency problems. Had an infection and blood in UA. Took prescribed antibodics and infection gone. Took another UA and still had blood in it. Waited and took 2 more UA and both had blood. Took a Cat Scan and the receptionist told me that it looked like all was fine except it said a simple cyst at adnexum but she didn’t know what that meant and that my blood work was all fine. I go in later for a bladder scope. My question is: Is a cyst at the adnexum okay and what does it mean? I am a 41 year old female.
Dr. Joshua’s Answer:
Ovarian cysts are found in nearly all women of fertile age who have an ultrasound examination done. The vast majority of such cysts require no treatment. Sometimes, the size, appearance or symptoms of ovarian cysts call for further examinations, follow-up or treatment. Discuss this with your doctor.
Ovarian cyst rupture or leaking may result in urinary tract infection or inflammation and consequent blood appearing on urinalysis.
It seems to me you are being adequately examined for hematuria (blood in urine test). Cystoscopy is done to rule out any possibility of bladder cancer. I’m happy that your CT scan was all fine. However, for diagnosis of adnexal masses, ultrasound examination is superior to CT.
