Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

You may be suffering from chronic neuropathic pain. This often presents as a burning sensation, and is chronic in nature. Chronic pain can be caused by injury, nerve damage, chronic nerve impingement, neuroma (benign nerve tumor), or lumbar spine problems such as nerve root damage due to untreated herniated disc.?

Clinical examination is essential for diagnosis of chronic pain. Nerve conduction tests may be then ordered, and lumbar spine MRI may be necessary to rule out any surgically treatable causes. Talk to your doctor about the chronic pain.

There are various effective treatments available for chronic pain. Drug treatment with anti-inflammatory agents, antiepileptic drugs, opioid painkillers are amongst them. There are also some novel drugs approved specifically for the treatment of chronic pain, specifically chronic neuropathic pain, such as Lyrica and Neurontin. If drug treatment fails, spinal cord stimulation is a possibility.
