Breast Pain, Progesterone IUD
My breast have been sore for several weeks, and i do not have a mentrual cycle because i have an IUD, can you tell me why they may be sore.
Dr. Joshua’s Answer:
The medical terms for breast pain are mastodynia and mastalgia. It’s not a rare complaint. There are various possible causes for breast pain and tenderness. Among the most common are pregnancy (possible even with IUD - I’m assuming you are using a progesterone IUD), hormonal cycles, fibrocystic breast disease, estrogen therapy, some medications and chest wall pain (from the muscles and bones). Fibrocystic breast disease also involves lumps, or adenomas, but it’s not a life threatening disease. Breast pain is not commonly the first symptom of breast cancer, but it’s possible.?
It’s impossible for me to say exactly what’s causing your symptoms. Clinical examination is needed. I strongly recommend that you see your doctor and have your breasts examined. Your doctor may then order a pregnancy test, mammography or ultrasound if needed. Any breast lump is always reason to see the doctor.
