Allergy the Cause of Tongue Swelling?

Allergy?

It seems like my tounge swells somewhat and is very sore. The middle of my tounge appears to have various splits on the top and the back close to the throat has bumps that are visible. What can cause this? It lasts about a week and then goes away. It only has happened three or four times in two years.

It sounds like you may be allergic to some food or drink. Apart from allergy, another possibility is mechanical irritation, e.g. from hard crust bread. Next time it occurs, try to think back to figure out if there’s some food or drink that you had, usually something you have rarely. If it starts to happen more often, visit your primary care physician during the episode to have him take a look. Allergy is not the only possible cause, but it’s one that immediately springs to mind.
