Dr. Joshua’s Answer:
One possibility is compression of the radial nerve during sleep. The radial nerve provides sensation for the 1st and 2nd (thumb and index) fingers, especially on the dorsal aspect (side of knuckles) of the fingers. This could cause tingling fingers and numbness, also could result in similar tingling sensations in the arm. Additionally, numbness and tingling in the 1st and 2nd fingers, arm and shoulder could be due to muscle tension around the shoulder and neck area, or irritation of the nerve root at the cervical (neck) spine. There are various other possibilities - there’s not much info for me to make a guess at what’s causing your symptoms. Tingling and numbness are common complaints, and most resolve without any treatment within a week or two. Try to vary your sleeping position for starters, and if you are using any sleeping pills or alcohol before going to bed, try to cut down on those so as not to sleep too deeply.?
If the tingling and numbness do not resolve in a couple of weeks, might be worth a visit to the doctor’s office.
