Allergic to the Cold

I think Im allergic to the cold. Ive been getting hives on my face and legs for a while and was not sure why. Until recently i was out in the cold for a long period of time, and a few hours after i had come in and warmed up, I got red, itchy welts and hives all over my face. Then I thought back and all the times that this happened to me I was either in the cold or in the cold water swimming? Is this common? Should I see my doctor because it only happens when i am exposed to the cold for a lengthy period of time?

?

Dr. Joshua’s Answer:

It’s rare, but possible. You could try and take some antihistamines before exposure to cold. A mild hydrocortisone lotion will also help. Talk to your doctor about these options to see if they are suitable for you.
