Dr. Joshua, I am about 11 days late for my period. I’m having pains in my lower abdominal area ( feels like cramps) I have taken 3 at home pregnancy tests, which have all been negative. I have never been this late for a period. I have been on the birth control pill for about 7 years up until February this year, I stopped. My periods continued to be regular up until this month. When I have a bowel movement the pain in my side is very noticable. Do you have any idea what this could be?
Dr. Joshua’s Answer:
It’s not uncommon to miss a period. In itself, that’s not a worrisome symptom, and you can usually wait to see if you’ll miss the next couple of periods as well before going to the doctor. There are many possible reasons for a missed period, including stress. On the other hand, by the time you read this, your period may have started already so you were just late. However, if abdominal pain is present, a closer look is needed. Home pregnancy tests are quite accurate, but if there is severe abdominal pain, a blood hCG (pregnancy) test is needed to rule out ectopic (outside the womb) pregnancy. It may be that your abdominal pains are unrelated to the missed period, and they can be related to the stress you’re experiencing because of your missed period, so you see it is a somewhat complicated business. It’s quite possible that you have just missed a period and happen to have abdominal pain, and both will resolve themselves in the end, so you can take comfort in that, but my recommendation, based on what you wrote, is definitely that you should see your doctor, just to rule out any serious causes.
